Saskatchewan
The province of Saskatchewan was incorporated in 1905, so we are not that old! However, the history of this part of Canada goes back 11,000 years. Our province is known for having a wonderful quality of life and we believe we offer a good place to live and raise a family. We have sporting, recreational, and educational facilities, as well as the arts and culture that big cities have to offer, but with the advantage of small town living. Now that really is so Saskatchewan!
Our economy is taking off and people want to move here to live and work and be a part of the growing prosperity we are experiencing. People from all over the world are coming to live here and make their home here, which is enriching the fabric of our society and creating more opportunities for us to show how welcoming and friendly we really are.
The People
Aboriginal people have lived in the area we now call Saskatchewan for around 11,000 years, and built their own societies and kept their history alive through oral tradition. The population was sparse, due to geographic isolation, extreme climate and an expansive prairie landscape.
European explorers arrived after 1690 and were soon followed by the fur traders. First Nation people helped the early visitors adapt to the land and supplied furs in exchange for goods. Immigration increased after the 1880’s due to the railways arriving and the efforts of the then Minister of the Interior encouraged settlers to the area. People mainly settled the flatlands of central and southern Saskatchewan and built tiny rail-side towns. Since those early pioneer days, people have been coming to Saskatchewan to live and work, homestead, farm and raise their families through the years and have all helped make it what it is today. Our strength is our diversity and we continue to welcome those who choose to come here and make it their home.
The Weather
Yes, it is cold in the winter! Saskatchewan has a continental climate and can have big temperature changes. In Prince Albert the daily normal mean temperature in January is –21.5C and can go to –40 C but there is little wind in the winter and the days are often crisp and sunny. Our summers are warm and sunny. Prince Albert is one of the sunniest places in Canada.
In our Parish, we hold regular Sunday m with an annual average of 2,170.6 or 6 hours per day.
The weather is important because of the farming and it is always a big topic of conversation in Saskatchewan and people will always stop and chat with you about the amount of snow that has fallen, how hot it is or how cold and so on.
